Queen Helene Necklace
The Queen Helene Necklace is a fascinating and stunning replica of one of City of David's most prized possessions. The gold plated silver with real white pearl and green agate, mimics a 2,000 year old find from the area. This beautiful piece is both visually pleasing and historically rich. The pearl was the original find, of Roman style and found in a Byzantine structure. Its elegance fits with the owners of the Byzantine structure. Experts suggest that the pearl was passed down through the generations for 300 years.
It is named after Queen Helene(56 C.E), for it was her notable and auspicious family who were said to have owned this Byzantine styled home. Her family moved to Jerusalem from Assyria and converted to Judaism. She was queen of Adiabene and Edessa, Assyrian city states. Together with her husband, they built palaces in the northern part of the City of David which is south of the Temple Mount. According to Talmudic accounts her family donated large sums of funds to the Temple. It is Josephus who notes Helene's role and contribution in the city.
