This necklace, dating back to the Second Temple period, is a replica of a half shekel coin believed to have been used as currency during the Jewish revolt against the Romans. The half shekel was a symbol of religious autonomy and had formerly been used in the time of the Tabernacle as well as the First and Second Temples as a way to collect the census or as a way for each Jewish male to give a monetary gift to the priests. This particular design is a replica of a half shekel coin found during an archaeological dig orchestrated by the Temple Mount Sifting Operation at Emek Tzurim and was discovered on the Mount of Olives. Experts have dated it 66/67 C.E. On one side of the coin one can see three pomegranates and in Ancient Hebrew script the words "Holy Jerusalem."
