“But ye O mountains of Yisrael ye shall shoot forth your branches and yield your fruit to My people Yisrael; for they are at hand to come.” – Ezekiel 36:8

why olive oil?

biblical

The Hebrew Bible mentions “oil” (in Hebrew shemen) no less than 192 times, with the majority of these cases specifically referring to olive oil.

ANNOINTMENT

The Hebrew word Mashiach (Messiah) literally means “the anointed one,” referring to the ancient practice of Kings being anointed with olive oil.

CEREMONIAL

For ceremonial oil used in the beit hamikdash, called ‘Alfa Oil,’ only olives picked by hand were allowed because using instruments harms the fruit and can start the fermentation process prematurely.

SPIRITUAL

On a spiritual level, olives are a reminder of Israel spreading the Torah to the world.

HEALTH

Extra virgin olive oil has been scientifically found to aid in the prevention of obesity, heart disease, diabetes, various cancers, osteoporosis, Alzheimer’s disease and more.

ISRAEL

A symbol of the modern State of Israel. The National Emblem of the State of Israel is the menorah. In 1985, the State of Israel produced new 10 agorot shekel coins which are embedded with the image of the menorah.

description

The Hebrew Bible mentions “oil” (in Hebrew shemen) no less than 192 times, with the majority of these cases specifically referring to olive oil.

One of its many references relates to the use of olive oil for anointing people or objects. Through the process, the anointed become “Kodesh”, or ritually holy. The Hebrew word Mashiach (Messiah) literally means “the anointed one,” referring to the ancient practice of Kings being anointed with olive oil. In addition, it is said that the Mashiach will arrive from the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem. The rabbis explain that the Mashiach will be anointed as King of Israel at the End of Days.

What are the health benefits of olive oil?
Extra virgin olive oil has been scientifically found to aid in the prevention of obesity, heart disease, diabetes, various cancers, osteoporosis, Alzheimer’s disease and more. Studies of the benefits of olive oil have come out of some of the most respected scientific research in the world.

Modern-day interest in the health benefits of olive oil increased when it was discovered in the 1940s and 1950s that those following the Mediterranean diet decrease their risk of early death from cardiovascular disease by 9 percent. A follow-up 2014 study credited an elevated consumption of olive oil with reducing the risk of cardiovascular events and stroke.

The Mediterranean diet includes a proportionally high consumption of extra-virgin olive oil, legumes, unrefined cereals, fruits, vegetables, fish, moderate amounts of dairy mostly coming from cheese and yogurt, moderate consumption of wine and small amounts of meat.

Olive oil, considered a “good fat”, is also linked to decreasing the risk of osteoporosis. A study from the Ain Shams University in Egypt found that the monounsaturated fat in olive oil helps the body break down calcium so that it can be properly absorbed into bones.

Additionally, some studies have found a decreased risk of type-2 diabetes in those who consume extra-virgin olive oil. Others credit olive oil for protecting the body against breast cancer.

In addition, there appears to be a lowered risk of Alzheimer’s disease and slower cognitive decline as well as a lessening of other neurological disorders, such as Parkinson’s disease estimated by as much as 13 percent.

Consuming olive oil is also good for mental health. According to Spanish researchers from the University of Navarra, a diet rich in olive oil can help prevent mental illness and it is 30 percent less likely to suffer from depression when following the Mediterranean diet.

How was oil used in The Temple?
The Biblically mandated process for preparing the oil is complicated. Normally, olive oil is made by crushing the olives and then pressing them. As per the Biblical commandment, olive oil for use in the menorah is made by smashing the olives by hand and then allowing the oil to drip for several days.

And thou shalt command the children of Israel, that they bring unto thee pure olive oil beaten for the light, to cause a lamp to burn continually. Exodus 27:20

This produces a very small quantity of oil, only about two percent of the volume of the olives as compared to 20 percent by pressing. But the method described in the Bible produces oil that is vastly superior to that produced by any other method.

Burning the oil in the Temple was considered a sacrifice in every respect, and does not require an actual Temple building to house it. The Biblical commandment could be fulfilled today by placing the Menorah on the Temple Mount, filling it with the oil that has been prepared, and having it lit by a Kohen (a Jewish man from the priestly caste).

Is oil spoken about in prophecies that are being fulfilled in our days?
In a manner that transcends nature, the relationship between the Jews and the land of Israel is so powerful that, according to the prophecy, the land was to remain barren until the Jews returned, at which point it was to give forth abundant fruit. And this is indeed what has happened in recent history.

But ye O mountains of Yisrael ye shall shoot forth your branches and yield your fruit to My people Yisrael; for they are at hand to come. Ezekiel 36:8

With olive trees growing in the Holy Land for thousands of years, today there are about 330,000 dunams or 81,000 acres, of olive orchards in the country. This produces nearly 16,000 tons of extra virgin olive oil annually. Yet most of this “liquid gold” is primarily for domestic use.

On a spiritual level, olives are a reminder of Israel spreading the Torah to the world. In Shir HaShirim Rabba (1:21), a collection of homiletical teachings on Song of Songs compiled in the fifth century, Jewish sages wrote, “As this [olive] oil brings light to the world, so too does Israel bring light to the world.”
